Summary
Activity Description:
The use of nutrients promoting health and the ubiquitous exposure to information and products can be overwhelming and baffling to many pharmacists and pharmacy technicians. Our fair-balanced and lively exploration of patients’ use of nutrients will include trends, evidence, controversies, marketing, regulation and safety, and polypharmacy concerns.

Learners will be exposed to ways of enhancing the collection and assessment phase of patient-centered pharmacy practice. This may lead to better team-based approach to therapy management, patient loyalty, communication with patients and other clinicians and ability to discern true science from marketing science for best patient outcomes.

Presentation Objectives - Pharmacists
1. Differentiate research design factors for nutrients/botanicals and synthetic drugs
2. Identify ways to improve nutrient-oriented patient-centered shared decision-making in your practice setting
3. Discuss controversial research regarding three common nutrients
4. Apply critical thinking to the interpretation of nutrient safety and interaction data

Presentation Objectives - Technicians
1. Recognize the difference between marketing science and clinical research
2. Identify basic drug-nutrient interaction principles to alert pharmacist in accordance to practice site guidelines
3. Discuss controversial research regarding three common nutrients
4. Outline references for nutrient safety and interactions

This is a knowledge-based CE activity and is targeted to pharmacists and technicians.
